The District of Columbia’s Hospital-based Violence Intervention Program (HVIP) provides services to individuals, and their families, who have experienced a life-threatening intentional injury. The DC HVIP partners engage with victims and their families while they are in the hospital recovering to create a support system that can lead to long-term change. HVIP staff connect program participants with government and community-based services to promote healing, reduce revictimization, and prevent future violence.

Participating Hospitals 
The Office of Victims Services and Justice Grants (OVSJG) has awarded grant funding to provide hospital-based violence intervention services at six area hospitals:

• Medstar Washington Hospital Center (MWHC)
• Howard University Hospital (HUH)
• George Washington University Hospital (GWUH)
• United Medical Center (UMC)
• UMD Prince George's Hospital Center (UMDPGHC) 
• Children's National Hospital 

OVSJG awarded over $1.2 million in FY18, over $1.4 million in FY19, over $1.3 million in FY20, over $1.2 million in FY21 and over $2 million in FY22 in support of the HVIP.

Victims Served 
OVSJG collects quarterly data from grantees on victims served. Victims receive an array of services based on the individual needs of the victim, including crisis intervention services; case management; and referrals and linkages to other supportive services, including mental health services, job training and employment services, and pro-social activities and support.
